Authorship and Contributorship

1. Introduction

Jurnal Agrotatanen is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in scholarly publishing. These principles include ensuring the fair and accurate attribution of authorship and contributorship in all manuscripts submitted to or published in the journal.

This policy establishes the criteria for authorship, the responsibilities of authors, and the procedures for acknowledging contributions to research and manuscript preparation. Its purpose is to ensure that all individuals who have made substantial intellectual contributions to a scholarly work receive appropriate recognition and that all listed authors accept responsibility for the integrity of the work.

Jurnal Agrotatanen adopts internationally recognized principles of publication ethics, including relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the authorship recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), where applicable to the research discipline.

2. Description

2.1. Authorship

Authorship provides academic recognition and may have important professional, social, and financial implications. It also entails responsibility and accountability for the published work. Jurnal Agrotatanen defines an author as an individual who has made a substantial intellectual contribution to the research and manuscript and who fulfills all the authorship criteria established in this policy.

2.2. Contributorship

Contributorship refers to participation in research or manuscript preparation that does not fulfill all the requirements for authorship but nevertheless deserves appropriate recognition. Such contributions should be transparently reported in the Acknowledgements section or an Author Contributions statement, as appropriate.

2.3. Unethical Authorship Practices

Jurnal Agrotatanen prohibits unethical authorship practices that compromise the integrity, fairness, and transparency of scholarly communication, including:

  • Gift, Guest, or Honorary Authorship: Including an individual as an author despite their failure to meet the established authorship criteria, for example, because of seniority, reputation, institutional position, or an expectation of reciprocity.

  • Ghost Authorship: Omitting an individual who has made substantial contributions that qualify them for authorship, or concealing the involvement of individuals who have provided significant writing or editorial assistance.

  • Denial of Authorship: Excluding an individual who meets the established authorship criteria without a legitimate and mutually agreed justification.

Transparency in the allocation of research responsibilities and manuscript contributions is essential. Authors are therefore encouraged to establish clear agreements regarding authorship and contributorship at the beginning of a research project and to update those agreements when the nature of the contributions changes.

3. Policy

3.1. Criteria for Authorship

Jurnal Agrotatanen requires all individuals listed as authors to meet all four of the following criteria, adapted from the ICMJE recommendations:

  1. Substantial contribution to the conception or design of the research, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of research data;

  2. Drafting or critical revision of the manuscript for important intellectual content;

  3. Final approval of the version to be published; and

  4. Accountability for all aspects of the work, including a commitment to ensure that questions concerning the accuracy or integrity of any part of the research are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All individuals who fulfill all four criteria should be listed as authors. Individuals who do not meet all four criteria should not be designated as authors solely on the basis of their position, funding contribution, supervisory role, or other non-qualifying involvement.

3.2. Non-Author Contributors and Acknowledgements

Individuals who have contributed to the research or manuscript but do not meet all the authorship criteria should be acknowledged appropriately in the Acknowledgements section, where applicable.

Examples of contributions that may warrant acknowledgement include:

  • Providing funding or financial support without making the intellectual contributions required for authorship;

  • General supervision of a research group or administrative support;

  • Technical assistance in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, sample preparation, or data collection that does not meet the authorship criteria;

  • Language editing, proofreading, formatting, or other editorial assistance;

  • Providing research materials, access to field sites, or other resources;

  • Assistance with data collection or routine measurements without substantial involvement in research design, analysis, or interpretation; and

  • Other contributions that do not fulfill all the authorship requirements.

Permission must be obtained from individuals before they are named in the Acknowledgements section. The corresponding author is responsible for obtaining this permission and ensuring that acknowledgements accurately represent the contributions made.

3.3. Order of Authors

The order of authorship must be agreed upon by all co-authors. Jurnal Agrotatanen does not prescribe a universal order of authorship, as conventions may differ across disciplines, research teams, and types of scholarly work.

Authors should discuss and agree on the order before manuscript submission. The order should reflect the authors' actual contributions and the conventions appropriate to their field of research. All co-authors should be informed of and agree to the final author list and its order.

3.4. Corresponding Author

One author must be designated as the corresponding author. The corresponding author serves as the primary contact between the authors and Jurnal Agrotatanen throughout the submission, peer-review, revision, and publication processes.

The corresponding author is responsible for:

  • Ensuring that all listed authors meet the journal's authorship criteria;

  • Confirming that all authors have reviewed and approved the manuscript submitted for consideration and any subsequent revised versions;

  • Obtaining the consent of all authors for submission and publication;

  • Ensuring the accuracy of author names, affiliations, contact details, acknowledgements, and relevant declarations;

  • Communicating editorial decisions, reviewer comments, and revision requirements to all co-authors;

  • Disclosing relevant conflicts of interest and ensuring that required declarations are complete; and

  • Coordinating responses to post-publication questions or concerns regarding the manuscript.

Designation as corresponding author does not exempt any co-author from responsibility for the integrity of the work.

3.5. Changes to Authorship

Any request to add, remove, or reorder authors after initial submission must be submitted in writing to the Editor-in-Chief by the corresponding author. The request must include:

  • A clear explanation of the reason for the proposed change;

  • A description of the relevant contributions, where applicable; and

  • Written confirmation from all affected authors, including any author being added or removed, that they agree to the proposed change.

Jurnal Agrotatanen may request additional information before making a decision. The manuscript's processing may be suspended while the request is evaluated.

Changes to authorship after acceptance are generally discouraged and will be considered only in justified circumstances. Any approved change must be documented and authorized by the Editor-in-Chief. If the article has already been published, a formal correction may be required to maintain the accuracy of the scholarly record.

3.6. Author Contributions Statement

Jurnal Agrotatanen encourages authors to provide an Author Contributions statement describing the specific roles of each author in conducting the research and preparing the manuscript.

Where appropriate, authors may use the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) to describe contributions such as conceptualization, methodology, investigation, data curation, formal analysis, visualization, writing of the original draft, review and editing, supervision, and funding acquisition.

The contribution statement must accurately reflect each author's actual involvement. Listing a role in the statement does not, by itself, establish eligibility for authorship; all listed authors must still meet the journal's authorship criteria.

3.7. Prohibition of Unethical Authorship Practices

Gift, guest, honorary, and ghost authorship are prohibited. All listed authors must satisfy the authorship criteria set out in this policy, and individuals who qualify for authorship must not be excluded without appropriate resolution.

Any individual or organization that provides writing, editorial, technical, or other assistance without meeting the authorship criteria must be acknowledged when appropriate. The nature of the assistance and any relevant financial support should be disclosed transparently.

If artificial intelligence (AI) tools are used in preparing a manuscript, their use must be disclosed in accordance with the journal's applicable AI-use and manuscript-preparation policies. AI tools cannot be listed as authors because they cannot fulfill the requirements for human authorship, including final approval and accountability for the work. Human authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and appropriate attribution of the submitted manuscript.

3.8. Group Authorship and Collaborative Research

For manuscripts submitted by a consortium, research group, or multi-institutional collaboration, the group name may be included in the author list where appropriate.

The manuscript must clearly identify the individuals who qualify for authorship and, where relevant, distinguish them from other group members who contributed to the work but do not meet the authorship criteria. The corresponding author must ensure that all listed authors have approved the manuscript and accept responsibility consistent with their contributions.

Where a group assumes collective responsibility for the research, the manuscript should identify the relevant group members and clarify the scope of their responsibility for the work.

4. Implementation and Procedures

4.1. Authorship Declaration

At submission, the corresponding author must confirm that:

  • All listed authors meet the journal's authorship criteria;

  • All authors have reviewed and approved the submitted manuscript;

  • All authors have agreed to its submission to Jurnal Agrotatanen;

  • The author list and order have been agreed upon by all co-authors; and

  • Author contributions and relevant acknowledgements have been reported accurately.

Jurnal Agrotatanen may request a separate authorship declaration, an Author Contributions statement, or additional supporting documentation when necessary.

4.2. Prevention and Management of Authorship Disputes

Prevention

Authors are strongly encouraged to discuss and agree on authorship eligibility, contributorship roles, and author order at the beginning of a research project. These arrangements should be reviewed as the project progresses, particularly when research responsibilities change or additional contributors become involved. Maintaining written records of these agreements is recommended.

Disputes Before Publication

Jurnal Agrotatanen does not ordinarily adjudicate disputes among authors concerning individual contributions or the allocation of authorship. If a dispute arises before publication, the journal will normally ask the parties to resolve the matter among themselves or through their respective institutions.

The journal may suspend manuscript processing until the dispute has been resolved and the appropriate authorship arrangements have been confirmed in writing.

Disputes After Publication

If a credible authorship dispute or allegation of authorship misconduct is raised after publication, Jurnal Agrotatanen will assess the matter in accordance with its publication ethics procedures and relevant COPE guidance.

The journal may request written statements from the authors, seek supporting documentation, and contact the relevant institutions where necessary. Depending on the findings and the nature of the issue, appropriate actions may include publishing a correction, issuing an expression of concern, or retracting the article when justified by the evidence and the journal's publication ethics policies.

4.3. Guidance and Resources

Authors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with recognized international standards for authorship and contributorship, including relevant guidance from COPE, ICMJE, and CRediT.

Jurnal Agrotatanen may provide links to these resources on its website to support authors in understanding and complying with this policy.

4.4. Institutional and Funder Requirements

Authors are expected to comply with relevant authorship, research integrity, and publication ethics requirements established by their institutions and funding organizations, provided that these requirements do not conflict with the journal's ethical standards.

Where applicable, authors should disclose funding arrangements and any contractual obligations that may affect the reporting, interpretation, or publication of the research.

4.5. Accountability for Published Work

All authors share responsibility for the integrity of the work presented in their manuscript. Each author is expected to understand their own contribution and to have sufficient confidence in the contributions of their co-authors to support the integrity of the overall work.

By submitting a manuscript to Jurnal Agrotatanen, the authors confirm that the information provided about authorship, contributorship, and acknowledgements is accurate and complete.

5. Policy Review and Compliance

Jurnal Agrotatanen reserves the right to request clarification, supporting documentation, or additional information regarding authorship and contributions at any stage of the submission, peer-review, acceptance, or post-publication process.

Failure to comply with this policy may result in suspension of manuscript processing, rejection of the submission, correction of the published record, or other appropriate action in accordance with the journal's publication ethics procedures.

This policy is intended to promote fairness, transparency, appropriate recognition, and accountability in scholarly publishing and will be reviewed periodically to ensure its continued relevance to recognized standards of publication ethics.
